I have always been obsessed with weddings! As a teenager, I would collect bridal magazines; anything I could get my hands on! When I started noticing Martha Stewart's wedding magazine, I became interested in wedding cakes! I was drawn to the fact that they could be customized to the bridal couple, whether to match the bridal dress, a favorite piece of china, or a specific theme they were going for. 

No more was the cookie-cutter cake that everyone would get for their wedding. Instead, how about a cake that expresses the style of your wedding and a centerpiece that will compliment the day you have spent so much time planning - you deserve it.

 

I started many years ago when I lived back home in Chicago at a cute little bakery I still visit today! I went back and forth between working in graphic design and cooking and baking.

I received my bachelor's degree in fine art at Southern Illinois University in 2012 and moved to Iowa the same year.

My husband was hired as the pastry and baking instructor at Kirkwood Community College. I started working as a part-time line cook in the bakery at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center, realizing I missed working in the kitchen!

In 2015, I was offered the position of Cake Designer at the hotel and promptly took it! 2016, I was asked to teach cake decorating classes for Kirkwood's baking program. I had many ideas for revitalizing the classes and implemented my techniques to teach my students. In 2019, I left my position at the hotel and opened Sugar Flower Cake Design. I love seeing the joy when my clients cut into their cake and take their first bite - it makes life much sweeter!   -          Jennifer Smith
